Landguard Fort has introduced a new multi-media tour guide for the 2022 season. Visitors can download to their smart devices and use to greatly enhance the time spent discovering, experiencing and enjoying the fort and its exhibits.
For the 2020 and 2021 visitor seasons the Fort implemented a number of changes to ensure visitor, staff and volunteer safety in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. One of these was to remove the current audio guide handsets from use as the handling of these by many people during the day presented a risk.
Trustee and implementation manager Steve Curtis said: "The audio guide was always very popular and always received positive visitor feedback, so for the 2022 season we were keen to find a way to both improve the offering and re-introduce it safely. The new multi-media tour guide is super-safe as visitors will download it to their smart phone or tablet eliminating the need to use a shared handset. It's also a much better solution offering both an audio and visual experience, whereas the old guide was audio only".
The multi-media tour guide is included in the admission price and is primarily intended for visitors to use as they walk around the fort as it provides additional insight into the history of the fort and its exhibits. But the solution has additional benefits too - for example some visitors might choose not to visit all areas of the fort, for example where climbing a staircase or entering a restricted space is required, but still experience them via the multi-media tour guide.
General Manager Nicola Barker highlighted the solution's green credentials saying: "The new multi-media tour guide reduces the requirement for the fort to print paper guides and recharge the shared audio handsets, so they are great for visitors, the fort and for the planet too!".
Once downloaded to a smart phone or tablet, the multi-media tour guide remains available until deleted, so visitors will be able to tour the fort again from the comfort of their own home.
Chairman of the Trustees Tim Clarke added: "These new multi-media tour guides will be great for visitors in 2022 and beyond. The Landguard Fort Trust is grateful for the support and involvement of East Suffolk Council. The trust received a grant through the East Suffolk Council 'Plan for the Future' Grant Scheme which was a significant help to us in providing the new multi-media tour guide".
